The Tesoro family is proud to announce that "Mr. V" has just been awarded the honorary doctorate in Music Education from the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. The College of Education nominated Mr. Valenzuela for the honorary doctorate based upon his steadfast work with thousands of children and their families for more than a generation, his commitment to public education and music education, and his dedication to helping children and families carry on the social and cultural inheritance of the southwest United States and southern Arizona.
The award of an honorary doctorate was an exciting event not only for Dr. V - as we should now honor him, and his family - especially his wife Eva who has supported him and his musical adventures and the students and families he teaches for more than a generation, and his entire family. But, The University of Arizona's award of an honorary doctorate to Mr. V - a man with corazón y alma (heart and soul) for both music and children is an honor for the children he has taught and continues to teach, the adults who have become teachers because of his inference, the parents who have benefited from his loving support of their children's development and happiness, and the Tucson community.
This is an honor for all of us. We hope Dr. V's work continues to inspire and that the University of Arizona's recognition of his work will bring a much needed emphasis to the value of fine arts in public education and in our daily lives.
THANK YOU, DR. V!! You have confirmed what we knew for years and now announced to the world his unwavering commitment to music education for all and to local communities. He is a 'quintessential example', as President Shelton said, of a UA graduate making good on his education.
Mariachi Tesoro is proud to be part of the long line of descendants and beneficiaries of his musical abilities and teaching and his continuing mentorship. We are delighted that the University of Arizona honored Dr. V's continuing accomplishments and work in public education and the arts and unending efforts over the course of a lifetime spent performing and teaching and mentoring probably thousands of students.
In 2008 and 2009, Dr. V brought more than 60 elementary students in the performing mariachi group at Davis Bilingual School, called Los Aguilitas, to perform in the Conference Showcase. Some of those members are members of Tesoro.
Mr. V, now Dr. V, is an inspiring model of good teaching and a wonderful teacher. We are very proud of him and his continuing accomplishments and work over the course of a lifetime spent performing and teaching and mentoring probably thousands of students.
Dr. V instills in his students a sense of confidence in performing and an excitement for music in general, and of course mariachi music in particular. He has been a master teacher at the Tucson International Mariachi Conference since it began in 1982 and continues to teach there. This year he brought more than 60 elementary students in the performing mariachi group at Davis Bilingual School, called Los Aguilitas, to perform in the Conference Showcase. Some of those members are members of Tesoro.
Dr. V's son, Jaime Valenzuela, is the Music Director for Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson. His son, Rudy Valenzuela, is also a public school music/mariachi teacher and an instructor with Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson.
