Every year Mariachi Tesoro attends the Tucson International Mariachi Conference (TIMC). This is an educational experience in which musicians attend classes to learn more about mariachi music and specifically to develop their talent with their particular instrument, including voice. Professional mariachis - locally, nationally, and international, teach the classes. Each year the TIMC Board of Directors chooses from among all the students several groups to perform at the Student Showcase.
After the Espectacular, the professionals perform for Tucson at the Tucson Convention Center. All the students perform the opening song, spreading out along the aisles throughout the arena, the master class students on the stage. Then the master class performs once more before the Espectacular begins. It's an invaluable experience, one in which Dr. Valenzuela (Dr. V) has participated since its inception 27 years ago. Tesoro's Director, Jaime Valenzuela, has been attending for some 20 years and is a teacher at the Conference.
Mariachi Tesoro also looks to particiapte in competitions. In 2007, Tesoro won first place in the San Antonio International Mariachi Competition at which the greatest mariachis in the world, Vargas de Tecitlan, were the judges.
