|Gil Sperry's Mariachi for Gringos raises money for Mariachi Youth Groups! |
Gil Sperry is the author of Mariachi for Gringos!, a book that answers questions about the origins of mariachi and provides the sheet music and lyrics in Spanish and English for 50 of the most popular mariachi songs. Mr. Sperry generously supports youth mariachi groups in Arizona and California by donating half of the proceeds to the youth mariachi group to support their music education and travel to mariachi conferences in the United States and in Mexico.
In 2010, Mr. Sperry is helping the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mexico to raise funds for their programming including adding a mariachi music education program. In October there will be an international mariachi youth competition and conference in Mexico at which the Mariachi Divas will appear and youth will meet, learn from one another and compete. Mr. Sperry is helping to organize this event and has invited Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson to participate.
Travel and accommodations are extraordinary expenses for our group and Mr. Sperry has agreed to donate half the proceeds from the sale of his book here to our group. We ask that you join Mr. Sperry in making our trip to Mexico possible this year. The book costs $15. For mailed orders, there is a small shipping and handling fee.*

More About Gil Sperry
Gil Sperry and his wife, Priscilla, have lived in Mexico for the past 12 years. They became lovers of mariachi music when they visited Puerto Vallarta in 1975.
"We had not been successful in our hunt for an air-conditioned restaurant on the beach; but we did find a very popular spot called 'Moby Dick' that featured both fresh seafood, courtesy of the Bahía Banderas, and fresh breezes, courtesy of some rapily whirling ceiling fans. We made yet another 'find' on that very pleasant evening, the music called mariachi." (Mariachi for Gringos!, p. xi).
The Sperry's have been devoted ever since to the music and to the youth who are committed to learning and peforming it.
Gil and Priscilla Sperry's son Matthew was a talented professional musician who played a variety of music, including mariachi. Gil regards his son as his "role model" and it is Matthew's talents and enthusiasm for music, mariachi. Matthew died in 2003 but his dedication to music and youth musicians continues to motivate the Sperry's commitment to youth mariachi.
Gil was also an elementary school teacher in Chula Vista, California, and coached soccer. He has written a book about his experiences in youth soccer and is working on a variety of projects - even though he's supposed to be retired. :) We hope you enjoy the book, Mariachi for Gringos!
